Although not Herefordshire based, Certainly Wood has often encountered the good folks of Demijohn at various shows throughout the length and breadth of the country. We love their ideas and their artisan approach to wonderful food and drink, so we wanted to share the love with you.

Demijohn describes itself as a liquid deli, which conjures up Harry Potter-esque images of shelves awash with interesting potions and potables. In many ways, that’s exactly what Demijohn is like. Its shops are an Aladdin’s cave of artisan spirits, liqueurs, oils, vinegars and whiskies, all of which are predominantly created in the UK by small producers.

A visit to Demijohn makes you feel like a kid in a candy store - there are so many strange and interesting temptations, each one beckoning you to try it out. From Scotland comes the likes of Organic Rhubarb Vodka, Raspberry Vodka, Gooseberry Gin and all sorts of wonderful fruit vinegars, including Elderflower and Bramble varieties. It also offers Seville Orange Gin from Worcestershire, Sloe Sherry from Yorkshire and the most divine 25- year-old Extra Vecchio traditional balsamic vinegar from Soliera in Italy.

Their emporiums also stock a good array of limited case single malt whiskies and wonderful oils such as Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Tuscany with a tasty Chilli Rapeseed Oil from Yorkshire. It’s like a whistle-stop taste tour of the UK and Europe.

The shops feature huge wooden shelves lined with row upon row of demijohns brimming with the different drinks and oils on sale.

Once you’ve had the chance to sample the offerings, you then choose the size and style of the bottle you like, into which the product is then decanted. A personalised message is written on to your bottle and it is beautifully gift-wrapped as a finishing touch. What’s more, the glass bottles can be refilled on your next visit making it very eco-friendly too.

Demijohn is much more than your typical deli – it is a completely new retail format that has turned selling into an art form. The staff know everything there is to know about the products and are passionate about the provenance. At certain times of the year, the shops will be closed so the staff can pick elderflowers or sloes from the local hedgerows to make sure they never run out of these lovely ingredients.

Established in the summer of 2004, Demijohn is the brainchild of ex-Army officer Angus Ferguson who has always had a passion for good food and drink. When he left the army, he and his wife Frances were keen to open the world’s first liquid deli where unusual artisan spirits, liqueurs, whiskies, oils and vinegars would be on offer.

From these humble beginnings, Demijohn now has four shops located in Edinburgh, Glasgow, York and Oxford. It also has an online shop, which has proved to be an overwhelming success.

With Christmas fast approaching, there are some glorious rums on offer including an intriguing new gift box of three rums entitled Chocolate Dark & Staumy. It’s definitely worth a peruse, either in person or online to find a gift that’s a little bit different.
