Whilst brothers Rich and James Manning are at the forefront of Herefordshire business The Shack Revolution, it’s very much a family affair with their parents, uncle and even dogs Rupert & Bear all part of the team.
The Shack Revolution began as a Shack Bar on wheels, constructed from wood and clad in corrugated steel. The very first one appeared at Edinburgh Food Festival in 2011 where they served craft beers, juices, cocktails and pizza and proving to be a huge hit.
Now they have some 10 mobile bars and cater to events from Scotland down to the Mediterranean. Last year they spent 5 days in the south of France at an event hosted by Facebook, serving coffee, juice and cocktails. They’ve even held a Shack Revolution Festival on their home farm featuring a double decker bus, two music stages and over 500 people whilst the largest number they’ve catered for was 95K during this year’s Rugby World Cup at Wembley where they had 10 bars manned by around 50 of their staff.
After four years of dreaming big, they finally took the plunge and set up The Shack Revolution as a restaurant in their home city of Hereford in May 2015 where they’ve created a fun-loving, relaxed atmosphere always full of people enjoying their amazing pizzas and drinks.
Rich and James are all about British produce and we particularly love the fact they use Certainly Wood logs for their wood-fired pizza oven.
Their fresh juices feature locally-grown apples and strawberries although a rogue orange does put in an appearance now and then. They’ll always choose local veggies and meat where possible, but insist of British grown if local produce not available.
It hasn’t been without a few hiccups on the road to glory; Rich’s first cocktail masterclass was held at a food festival in Clapham Common in front of 300 people and involved beetroot in a blender. The lid wasn’t on properly which resulted in Rich and several of the audience getting drenched in pink juice.
As for who inspires the pair, they name three people who have had an influence on them – Richard Reed of Innocent, Richard Branson and, without a doubt, their father.
The Shack restaurant opens Wednesday and Thursday 12pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm until Midnight and Sunday 12pm – 11pm in Bastion Mews, Hereford HR1 2BT
