Back to Woodnote Magazine

The countdown to Christmas has begun with all the big stores competing for the cutest, heartstring-twanging, most festive advertising campaign of 2017. A jaunt to a European city to take in a Christmas market is one way of escaping the seasonal UK kerfuffle. Alternatively, you could retreat to a cabin in the woods and take time to relax in style before the big day.

We’ve put together a round-up of some rather lovely cabins and woodland retreats on offer around the world, where the watch word is peace and quiet in total luxury, for the most part.

This extraordinary building is made entirely of wood both inside and out. Located in the Austrian Tyrol, it offers stunning views of the woods and mountains whilst nurturing people in a cosy environment enhanced by a wood-burning stove and underfloor heating.

It was designed to look like a cross between a UFO and a prehistoric bird, hence the name. You can immerse yourself in the surrounding nature or just stay put and relax, eat, drink and be merry.

If you can’t decide whether you prefer the woods or the water, why not have both with this delightful floating cabin in the heart of Essex.

Big enough for four, you can go all ‘Swallows & Amazons’ on this break as a rowing boat is included too. Head over to your personal, wood-fired hot tub, tuck into cakes at the nearby Tiptree Tearooms or unwind at the on-site yoga studio. The perfect calm before the Christmas storm.

Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado

Step back in time with a stay in one of the thirteen cabins from a bygone era, set against the backdrop of an 1800’s ghost town.

Located in the Colorado Rockies, these hand-hewn log cabins are luxuriously appointed and named after the mining families that used to inhabit them. There’s a wood-burning stove in each cabin – perfect for relaxing after a long-day’s hiking or a massage at the resort spa. Definitely, one for the bucket list if not the Christmas list.

Log Cabin, Transylvania

At just £12 a night, this rustic cabin in Transylvania is somewhat cheaper than the Verbier chalet and is a mere throw of a garlic bulb from Castle Dracula. Surrounded by an orchard, it sleeps six and even has wifi included within the price.

The area is truly historical and is known as the Valley of the Dinosaurs - you’ll also hear tales of giants and carnivorous plants as well as those pesky vampires. Stay there if you dare!
