What size are your log crates and how much wood will I receive?

Our kiln dried hardwood log crates are available in three sizes: medium, large & extra large.

Each crate is tightly packed with neatly stacked logs, providing excellent value with minimal air gaps. Due to the consistent shape and uniform stacking, crates contain significantly more wood than loose-filled builders’ bags or barrow bags. All our logs are kiln dried to an average moisture content of below 20%, meaning you’ll get maximum heat output with every burn.

Why Crates Are a Better Choice Than Loose-Filled Bulk Bags?

Crates deliver significantly better value per cubic metre, as every log is neatly stacked and fully usable. With no wasted space and no loose debris, you get more burn-ready wood per order.

Their uniform structure makes storage easier, too. Crates are space-saving and can be kept in garages, sheds, or even outside with a simple waterproof cover. The weather-protected design and breathable wrapping ensure the logs stay dry and in top condition. What’s more, customers can choose from species-specific crates, such as Oak & Ash, beech, oak or birch, tailored to burn preferences. And every crate is packed by hand, ensuring a consistent, premium-quality experience throughout.

Are your logs suitable for all types of stoves and open fires?

Yes, our kiln dried hardwood logs are ideal for wood burning stoves, open fires, fire pits, chimineas, and wood-fired ovens. The logs are cut to a standard length of 25cm, which fits 99% of the UKs woodburning stoves. The dry, dense hardwood ensures a clean, consistent burn with minimal smoke and ash.

What species do you supply in crates?

Our crates are filled with high-quality hardwood. Here is a breakdown of what species we supply (please note these are subject to change):

  • Birch & Oak: Our birch & oak crates are our most popular crate option. Oak is very dense and burns hotter and longer compared to other hardwoods, while silver birch is easy to light and great for starting a fire with. A great firewood mix for beginners and regular fire starters alike.

  • Birch: Our great value kiln-dried log crate is made of 100% silver birch. Silver birch, while classed as a hardwood, is less dense compared to ash& oak. Because of this, it will burn quickly. However, silver birch is very easy to light and use.

  • Oak & Ash: A premium mix of hardwoods. Oak is dense and burns hotter and longer than other hardwoods, while ash is easy to light and maintain. A great fire starting mix.

  • Oak: 100% oak crates are great for firelighting experts when lighting fires indoors or for outdoor chefs for smoking or cooking with.

How should I store the logs once delivered?

Our logs arrive ready to burn and can be stored in the crate. If you’re storing them outdoors, we recommend covering the top to protect from rain while leaving the sides exposed for ventilation. Good airflow is key to maintaining their dry condition.

What do I do with the leftover crate?

Certainly Wood’s stacked firewood crates aren’t just a better way to store and burn logs they’re also packed with repurposing potential. Once empty, these untreated wooden crates can be:

  • Chopped into kindling or smaller firewood, safe and burn-ready

  • Broken down into pallets or raised storage bases for sheds and gardens

  • Upcycled into planters, shelving, or compost bins

  • Used for rustic indoor storage like boot racks or pet bedding bases

How Much Firewood Will I Need For A Typical Winter?

A tricky question to answer as it will depend on so many factors:

  • The efficiency of your stove
  • The size of your property
  • How well insulated your property is.
  • How often the stove is used
  • What the outside temperature is
  • How you use your stove – burning on full airflow all the time or on low heat.

However, this is a common question we get asked, so here’s some guidance to give you some idea. Assuming you use the most efficient fuel – kiln dried- in an average year, you will likely use 3-4 cubic metres of firewood. Remember that you will use significantly more wood if it is not dry because it provides far less heat energy  – up to twice as much.

Our extra-large crates are a great bulk option for keeping stocked up over winter. Shop crates.

Hardwood vs Softwood

When it comes to choosing the best firewood, hardwood generally performs best for long, efficient burns. Put simply, hardwoods are denser than softwoods, which means they burn hotter and for longer, making them ideal for wood burners and indoor heating. Softwoods, on the other hand, catch alight more quickly and produce a fast, bright flame, which makes them a good option for kindling or quick fires.

Both have their advantages, but hardwood tends to deliver greater heat output and consistency, especially for regular home use.

At Certainly Wood, we’re here to help you choose the right firewood for maximum performance and efficiency. Here are the key differences to help guide your decision.

Seasoned vs Kiln Dried

There is a real difference between kiln dried and seasoned logs and the type you choose can affect how well your fire burns. Put simply, kiln dried logs have been dried in a kiln to a consistent low moisture level, while seasoned logs are air-dried over time. Both can be used on your stove or fireplace, but the performance can vary. That's because of the difference in moisture content. Logs with an optimum moisture content of 15%-20 % ignite more easily, burn more efficiently, and produce less smoke.

At Certainly Wood, we’ve spent years helping you get the very best from your wood-burning experience. Here are the key differences to help you choose the right logs for your needs.
